FAQs

What is TCM Bodywork?

TCM Bodywork is a 60 minute needle-free treatment integrating a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) modalities including fire cupping, gua sha, sotai, myofascial release, and the application of topical herbal remedies. If you’re dealing with neck, shoulder, or back tension from long hours at the computer, stress, injury, or workouts, this service offers targeted relief to help you feel better, faster.

What is gua sha?

Gua sha, like cupping, is used break up stagnation in acupuncture channels to promote flow and repair to areas of pain and tension. It's perfect for accessing all the nooks that can be hard to reach with cupping alone. Traditionally gua sha is also used in cases of upper respiratory infection, allergies and asthma, as it can promote circulation to the lungs, release tension in the chest and boost immune response.

What is sotai?

Sotai is a gentle Japanese movement therapy that helps rebalance the body by working with your natural, pain-free range of motion. Instead of forcing tight areas, Sotai guides you through simple, comfortable movements paired with breath and light resistance to release tension, improve alignment, and restore ease in the nervous system. It’s subtle, relaxing, and surprisingly effective.

What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a gentle method of bodywork used to unwind superficial fascial layers (connective tissue) that are responsible for long held pain patterns. Unlike deep tissue which applies strong pressure directly to muscle groups, myofascial release uses light pressure that works in flow with the superficial tissue (not against), encouraging the nervous system to let go.

What is fire cupping?

Fire cupping uses a flame to create suction inside a glass cup, which is then placed on the skin. The suction gently pulls on the skin, fascia, and underlying muscle, helping to increase blood flow and release tension. By enhancing circulation and delivering more oxygen to the tissues, cupping can support faster healing from injuries. It’s also a popular recovery tool for athletes looking to reduce soreness and speed up recovery after intense workouts.

What are topical herbs?

Topical herbal oils and liniments contain compounds known to relieve inflammation, improve circulation and reduce swelling to promote faster healing. We use a combination of plant based topicals tailored to your specific condition.

Will I get bruises?

The circular marks left after cupping aren’t bruises in the traditional sense. They're caused by suction—not impact—and are totally normal. The vacuum pulls blood to the surface, which may break tiny capillaries and create a mark that looks like a bruise, but it usually doesn’t hurt.

These marks are a sign that circulation has increased in the area, helping your body move out stagnation and bring in fresh oxygen and nutrients. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is considered a therapeutic release called "sha."

Marks typically fade within 3 to 10 days, and the more often you receive cupping, the less intense they become.
